I started my sewing classes with Aunty Nadia last thursday and it was great. I will be going every Thursday & Friday mornings from 8 am to 10 am.
There are only 3 of us so far and i love it. Both of them are beginners but i dont mind because i get to pick up great tips from A.Nadia
So for our first class we just learned how to sew straight and cut and make simple side seams on kangas, if you are wondering what a kanga is click here and here. I used to do them but class i learned the proper way of doing it, and i had an “ahha..why didnt i think of that?” moment.
In yesterday’s class we were taught how to make a cotton underskirt and here is the one i made
I had fun learning how to make this quite easy to do and plan on making some for my mum
I love the lace detail
The elastic was super easy to do and i love how neat A.Nadia wants our work to be. She actually stresses on the importance of it being neat and give us tricks on how to get the actual crisp look
I learned how to use the rolled hem foot
I found using this foot a bit tricky as you have to feed the fabric into the foot, and it has to be just the right amount of fabric. If you give too much your machine will get stuck and if you dont get enough fabric the foot has nothing to roll to make a hem. Kind of fustrating until you get the hang of it..mine got stuck twice and i am determined to practice until i get it PERRRRRRFECT!
A.Nadia asked if there somethign in particular i wanted to learn.
My answer was ”Yes i want to learn how to make EVERTHING“.
I admit that i tend to enjoy making bags, wallets, accessories but in all truth i want to learn how to make garments for myself and my girls. To be able to whip up something for my home and of course to be able to make my own patterns.
I have truly found my calling and i believe that i am in the right track to reaching my goals.

wow…that’s a good start Mayya….
Thanks Nima i am very proud of my accomplishment
woow..a nice start.Happy to hear that u enjoyed u’r class.Thats the exalt thing im looking for.i want to learn how to make my own pattern and be unique my way.u are very lucky and I wish i have some1 like A.Nadia..
Oh Anne its wonderful you have no idea how excited i am and so attentive to every word A.Nadia says..she is so fun to be around and loves sewing as much as i do
Sounds great! It’s those tricks and tips I wish I had been taught. There is something about teaching yourself how to sew that means those aren’t in my repertoire. Things I hope to pick up one day from someone.

Oh Mayya, what a wonderful job. I am so proud of you being proud of this simple but elegant garment. Your Mum will be sew happy to wear whatever you make for her. And those precious girls are going to be real happy, as they will have more little pants and shirts than any in their classes. Congratulations again on a job well done. A tip on the rolled hem foot for those not taking class with you; use a tiny scrap of cotton fabric to start the machine stitching (this will keep the dogs from biting into your fabric) then as you start the pattern fabric into the machine, stitch about an inch or so of folded fabric under that foot to start, then with the needle in down position carefully bring the fabric up into the roll of the foot, hold your fabric taunt without pulling on it and about two inches off the machine bed. Start stitching slowly this is not a place to race, your fabric will feed smoothly and you will not tend to roll the fabric letting the machine and the feet do all the work. A great practice is on PJs. The rolled hem makes a wonderful scarf edge. Love to you Mayya. Carylanne
