Pretty dresses but which one?

My girls are invited to a birthday party in approx 2 weeks time and i have decided that I want to make their dresses. Now this coming from someone who has only ever made one dress, no actually 2 dresses but with a lot of help wants to now make not one but two dresses and they have to be weareble LOL is quite a challenge click here to read about it.

I dont know why i have this urge to make their dresses i mean i could easily buy something but i cant bring myself to. Its defintely a challange which i am up for but would like your help in choosing a pattern.

I need something quick and easy to make as i need to make 2 of them, and pretty of course.

I found great patterns on You can Make this

The first one liked is a pinafore dress and its reversible so two looks in one..sounds good to me

Another one i liked is the Forget me Knot dress

or this wrap top which can also be made into a dress

I love that i could make the dress for Hadeel and the top for Dania so they dont really have to be matchy unless they let me LOL

I am not really sure which one to pick i am really loving the reversible pinafore but i never used a pattern to sew a dress before.

Please help me pick one, have you tried any one of them? do you have any other patterns you recommend i look at..i will need to make a decision by thursday so i can get sewing…your help is very much appreciated.

Today is your last chance to vote for what you would like to sew with Sew IT

Mayya, I like the first dress.its simple, cute and the pinafore is a classic. Can be worn with tights or a shirt in side . its so versatile and you can dress it up or dress it down. I personally loveeee it and if I had a girl, I’m sure you’d be seeing her dressed in a one. Whicever you choose though I’m sure your girls will look lovely, they are so lucky to have a mum whip them something pretty all the time :D Happy creating!

I haven’t tried any of those but the reversible pinafore looks like it would be the easiest to make. They are all gorgeous dresses though. I look forward to seeing what you make!

Very hard to choose one as they are all pretty i could have added a couple more dresses but thought 3 would be enough to choose from.
Thanks for helping me out Jodie :)

My vote is the pinafore. I like that it’s reversabile. You could dress each child in the reverse of the other if they decide not to match. Looks simple and classic. The others are cute as well but if you had to pick one…

    • mayya says:

Thanks Sheila for your input i agree that its the simplest to make and love the fact that its reversible..and it got great reviews on YCMT

Yes i agree there is just something about it but i feel that i am in way over my head it looks simple but something tells me that i should stay away from it until i am more comfortable making clothes..

Mayya, if you want success, I highly recommend Carla C patterns on YCMT. I have all her patterns and besides perfect sizing, I learn a lot from her techniques. And the pattern pieces are organized in a way that makes it very easy for us to print and cut. But if you ask me among the 3 you put here, I’d say the 1st one will be easy and cute :)

They’re all cute, but I’d go for the pinafore. It’s nice that it’s reversible so if something is spilled you can switch it around. And the pinafore style dress is one of the few ones my daughter will wear.

Mayya, to do great job sewing for children one must start with an easy project. The reversible dress # 1 is so versatile and easy to do for someone like you who follow directions sew well. If you did the #2 dress with all that gathering and such you may get discouraged and never complete it. #3 is even more complicated with the gathered ruffle and placements of button holes and sashes. Definitely do the easy peasy one. .
Hint from a 40+year sewist. Making clothing is sew very simple if you DO THE MAKING. Mark everything, use the straight of grain in the fabric, and follow that line precisely when placing the pattern. Pin often and keep the ripper at the elbow. Use good thread and a fresh needle. Interface with the lightest you can find to do the job, if a pattern calls for sew in then do not use an iron on. There will be a difference as to how it hangs.
    Do you know how to make the fabric hang properly from the straight of grain? I will tell you;
Wash and dry the fabric, cotton will now never shrink again; fold the fabric back into a long yardage piece, selvages together. Hold out your arms in wing fashion look at the part that is now at the bottom near the floor is there a wave? Move your fingers along the selvage that you are holding in both hands. Moving it will make the wavy become smooth. When it is just right you will know. Now then, lay the fabric down still holding the selvages together. See the top of the fabric that is uneven? Cut it off. Straight of grain is what you now have. Cut away. Use the rotary cutter and ruler to make a straight across the width of the fabric cut. If I rambled on I am sorry, but hey girlfriend you said you didn’t know how to make a dress. Crafts and Clothing construction are sew sew different. Carylanne. Here is a picture of the last dresses I made my three grand’s for a wedding 5 years ago this month.

Caryl thank you ever so much for that information and for breaking the dress pattern down from easiest to most difficult and i shall take your advice and the other ladies who commented and make the pinafore as its the simplest one of the three.

Will try finding the straight of the grain as per your instructions thank you ever so much for your help i really appreciate it xxx
